Selection process
9 stages, one window a year
What happens at each stage, and what it asks of you. Published detail and our own preparation advice are kept in separate boxes throughout — never merged.
- 01
Eligibility
Before the window opensOfficialSix published criteria, each of them binary. A file that fails one is closed before anyone assesses its substance.
What is published
- Nationality of a member country, evidenced by passport or equivalent.
- A master's-level degree or higher in a relevant field, completed before the September start date — not before the application date.
- Two to six years of professional experience in a related work area. Doctoral research, part-time work and relevant internships may count towards the total.
- An excellent command of spoken and written English. There is no test to sit and no certificate to upload; it is assessed continuously through every later stage.
- Not a current WBG staff member, and not precluded by the employment eligibility policy on close relatives.
How to prepare — our advice
- Resolve borderline cases — degree completion dates, dual nationality, a relative at the Bank Group, an experience total near a boundary — before the window opens, not during it.
- Write the experience calculation down once, with exact dates, and keep it consistent with the CV.
- 02
Profile and stream
The months before SeptemberOfficialYou apply to a stream, not to an institution. The stream you name is the lens through which every other part of the file is read.
What is published
- Two tracks: Operations, which covers the country-facing streams, and Specialized Functions, which covers Legal; Outcomes; Information and Technology Solutions; and Budget, Performance Review and Strategic Planning.
- One primary stream plus up to two alternates. No changes after the deadline.
- The Bank Group states the process and chances of success are substantially the same across streams, with some variation in process depending on the stream selected.
How to prepare — our advice
- Evidence, not aspiration: any stream where you cannot write three specific pieces of evidence from your own career is not your primary stream.
- Build an evidence inventory — every project, output, result and number — before you write anything.
- 03
Application
01–30 September 2026OfficialA CV of no more than two pages, a 250-word stream statement and two 400-word personal statements. Roughly 1,100 words in which to establish distinctive expertise.
What is published
- Exactly three uploads: CV (ideally one page, maximum two); passport photo page confirming birth date and primary nationality; proof of degree or enrolment letters confirming post-graduate degrees and actual or expected completion dates.
- The Bank Group states plainly: do not upload any other documents that are not listed.
- No late submittals, no applications by email, and no changes to the application after the deadline.
- The Bank Group notes it may not be able to assist with technical issues raised in the final few days before the deadline.
How to prepare — our advice
- Draft every free-text response outside the browser, with version history, and check each against the portal's own word count.
- Set a personal deadline five days before the official one.
- 04
Longlist review
Early OctoberOfficialApplications are reviewed against the eligibility criteria and, for those that pass, against the substance of the file.
What is published
- Review is by a combination of Human Resources and staff with technical expertise in the stream you selected.
- The Bank Group indicates that a small proportion of applications advance. It does not publish current application or selection figures, and neither do we.
How to prepare — our advice
- A reviewer spends a few minutes on a file. The work is making distinctive expertise visible quickly — the Bank Group's own published advice is to make it straightforward for reviewers to see you as a successful future YP, starting with fit to your selected stream.
- 05
Online assessments
Mid to late OctoberOfficialAn on-demand video interview and a leadership assessment; where the stream uses one, an online technical assessment.
What is published
- The Bank Group gives the example of a financial analysis test for Investment stream applicants.
- Dates are fixed. The Bank Group states it will not reschedule or provide alternate dates.
How to prepare — our advice
- Keep the second half of October clear and connected. This single point has cost candidates their cycle.
- The video interview allows a limited window per answer and no second attempt. The problem is almost never vocabulary — it is running out of time halfway through the point.
- 06
Assessment centre
December and JanuaryOfficialAbout an hour: a group exercise of roughly 45 minutes ending in a joint presentation, followed by a written reflection of about 15 minutes.
What is published
- The case premise is drawn from a Bank Group report or project.
- The exercise ends in a joint presentation to a representative.
- The written reflection responds to two prompts related to the exercise.
- Typically held on the morning of the panel interview, preferably in person.
How to prepare — our advice
- The group exercise exists in large part to observe whether a candidate can work outside their own specialism — which is what the rotations will require.
- The written reflection is fifteen minutes of unedited English prose about your own contribution. It is not a summary of the case.
- 07
Panel interview
December and JanuaryOfficialApproximately 45 to 50 minutes with technical experts in your stream, senior staff from around the Bank Group, and an HR staff member.
What is published
- It assesses technical depth and breadth, quantitative and qualitative thinking and problem solving, motivation, and commitment to the mission and values.
- Interviews take place in Washington DC, a country office, or online. For this cycle, in-person interviews are indicated for Washington DC and Nairobi in December, and Paris and Bangkok in January.
- Travel, accommodation and reasonable expenses are arranged and covered.
- The Bank Group advises against consulting prepared notes during the interview, and advises bringing only your submitted CV, a notepad and a pen.
How to prepare — our advice
- Every number on your CV must be accurate and defensible under questioning by someone who works in your field.
- Panels are staffed by technical experts in your stream. Enthusiasm for the programme is not a substitute for substance, and when it substitutes, it reads as a warning sign.
- 08
Final selection
Late January – early FebruaryOfficialProspective Young Professionals are informed of the Bank Group's intent to offer. Two references are requested and a background check follows.
What is published
- References are requested only from candidates under serious consideration.
- The offer is a two-year staff term appointment at grade GF, renewable for a further five years based on performance.
- Salary and benefits are determined by pre-set criteria and are not negotiable.
How to prepare — our advice
- Brief your referees properly and early — on the stream you named and the evidence your file rests on.
- 09
Programme entry
September 2027OfficialThe cohort starts in Washington, DC. Start dates are not deferred, because the Academy's learning is cohort-based.
What is published
- Three mandatory rotations of eight months each begin, at least one of them country-office based.
- The YP Academy runs across the two years.
Candidates should always verify the latest requirements and dates on the official World Bank Group website.
No preparation service can promise, guarantee or imply selection. The programme is highly competitive and outcomes depend on the applicant pool, the Bank Group's needs and factors outside any candidate's control.
