The Programme
The Young Professionals Programme, as the Bank Group describes it
The World Bank Group calls the YPP its “premier leadership development program for high performing professionals with a passion for global development.” Three claims sit inside that sentence, and each of them shapes what the selection process looks for.

What it is
Inside the programme
A two-year programme
OfficialA two-year staff term appointment at grade GF, renewable for a further five years subject to performance. Not a graduate scheme and not an entry-level intake.
Three enforced rotations
OfficialThree rotations of eight months each: your primary function, a second functional rotation, and a cross-institutional rotation between the World Bank, IFC and MIGA.
Country-office exposure
OfficialAt least one of the three rotations must be country-office based — proximity to the client, to the constraints that actually bind, and to implementation as it really happens.
The YP Academy
OfficialA cohort-based curriculum across the two years: onboarding, language learning, business and leadership skills development, operational training, and mentoring.
Mentoring and a cohort
OfficialMentoring is a published component of the Academy, and learning is cohort-based — which is also why start dates are not deferred.
A global institution
OfficialThe programme recruits on behalf of the World Bank (IBRD and IDA), the International Finance Corporation and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency.
Leadership development
OfficialThe Bank Group describes the YPP as its “premier leadership development program for high performing professionals with a passion for global development.”
Mobility is assumed
OfficialIn applying you are assumed to be willing and able to work in any Bank Group office worldwide, and start dates are not deferred.
One window a year
OfficialA single 30-day application window each year. No off-cycle applications, no late submittals, and no changes after the deadline.
Eligibility
The 6 published criteria
Each is binary. A file that fails one is closed before anyone assesses its substance.
- 01Official
Hold the nationality of a World Bank Group member country, as demonstrated by an officially issued passport or equivalent document.
- 02Official
Have completed a master's-level degree or higher qualification in a relevant field before the September start date of the programme.
- 03Official
Have 2 to 6 years of professional experience in a related work area.
There is no age requirement. The programme is designed for early-career professionals, and the constraint that gives effect to that is the two-to-six-year experience band, not date of birth.
- 04Official
Have an excellent command of spoken and written English. Fluency in additional languages is an advantage.
- 05Official
Not be a current World Bank Group staff member, including term, open, short-term (ST) and extended-term (ET) appointments.
- 06Official
Not be precluded by the Bank Group's employment eligibility policy, which governs close relatives working for or performing services for the Bank Group.

Grade, pay and benefits
What is actually published
FY27 World Bank Group salary scale for the United States, published 7 July 2026.
- Minimum
- US$111,900
- Midpoint
- US$159,900
- Maximum
- US$207,900
Grade GF. The Bank Group's professional grade structure runs from GA to GK. GF sits in the professional and technical band — a substantive mid-professional entry point, not a trainee grade.
- Salary scales are revised annually and vary by duty station. Check the current published scale rather than relying on any figure quoted in a book, a forum or on this page.
- Entry salaries within a grade reflect experience and qualifications; only a small minority of staff sit in the upper third of a band.
- Salary and benefits are not negotiable — the Bank Group states they are determined by pre-set criteria applying to all prospective staff.
- World Bank Group staff who are not United States citizens are not liable for US income tax on their Bank Group income; US citizens receive a tax allowance instead. A WBG figure is therefore not like-for-like with a private-sector gross salary.
Benefits
Benefits are set out in the Bank Group's published staff benefits material. Because those are policy documents that change, no figures are reproduced here.
- Medical, dental, life and accident insurance
- A pension plan
- Annual leave
- Relocation support for staff relocating to the duty station
Why it is worth it
What the programme gives you
Reach
OfficialThe Bank Group committed roughly US$162 billion across its institutions in fiscal year 2025. Work at this institution operates at a scale very few careers offer.
Learning velocity
Our analysisThree rotations in two years, across functions and institutions, with a country-office posting and a structured curriculum. Most people acquire that breadth over a decade, if at all.
The public–private seam
Our analysisVery few institutions let one person see sovereign lending, private investment and political risk insurance applied to the same development problem. The cross-institutional rotation is the mechanism.
The cohort
Our analysisA peer group formed at the same career stage, across sectors, regions and institutions — consistently reported as the most durable asset of the programme.
What is assessed
The competencies the selection tests
Our reading of what the published stages are actually measuring.
Technical expertise
Our analysisDepth in one named stream, specific enough to describe in a sentence and evidence in a project.
Development perspective
Our analysisConnecting your own technical work to the mission precisely rather than sentimentally.
Leadership
Our analysisChanging outcomes without necessarily having the authority to instruct anyone.
Analytical thinking
Our analysisQuantitative and qualitative reasoning under time pressure, out loud, with your working visible.
Communication
Our analysis250 and 400 words on the page; a limited window per answer on video; fifty minutes with a panel.
Problem solving
Our analysisA development case with incomplete information, stakeholders, implementation constraints and risk.
Motivation
Our analysisGrounded in a decision you actually made, not expressed in the abstract.
Impact
Our analysisResults that are quantified, attributable and defensible under questioning.
WBG knowledge
Our analysisThe institutions, the operating model, the instruments, the current agenda and how the Group measures itself.
Interview readiness
Our analysisStructured answers, rehearsed out loud and timed, against questions you have not seen.
Assessment performance
Our analysisA group exercise with strangers, a joint presentation, and fifteen minutes of unedited written reflection.
Why preparation matters
Being eligible is only the beginning.
The published criteria are binary and most serious candidates meet them. What separates files after that is evidence: a stream chosen on the strength of what you can actually show, results that are quantified and defensible, and answers rehearsed against the format you will face rather than the one you imagine.
We are here to help
How we prepare you
The Essential Guide
The full written preparation — the programme, eligibility, stream selection, the application, assessments and the panel, with frameworks and a question bank.
Personalised mentorship
Scheduled one-to-one sessions from profile diagnosis through to final readiness, booked through your dashboard rather than chased over email.
Application review
Structured feedback on your own material — CV, stream statement and personal statements — against the criteria the selection actually applies.
Interview and assessment practice
Timed video-interview practice, case work and panel rehearsal against questions you have not seen.
What we claim
And what we do not
The second list matters more than the first.
What we do
We prepare you
Structured preparation against the published criteria and the formats the selection actually uses, with every factual claim sourced.
We label what is ours
Bank Group material and our own analysis are visually distinct on every page, so you always know whose claim you are reading.
What we do not do
We do not write your application
The World Bank Group requires that every response and submission in an application is the applicant's own original work, produced without unauthorised materials or external resources — including AI-based tools — and without assistance from any other person. Intorgcareer does not write, draft, edit into final form, or submit any part of an application on a candidate's behalf.
We do not promise an outcome
No preparation service can promise, guarantee or imply selection. The programme is highly competitive and outcomes depend on the applicant pool, the Bank Group's needs and factors outside any candidate's control.
We are not affiliated with the World Bank Group
Intorgcareer is an independent preparation and mentoring service and is not affiliated with, endorsed by, sponsored by, or operated by the World Bank Group.
